Name: Mumei | true name unknown

Ethnicity: Luxembourger

Race: Human

Origin: Magic

Allegiance: Neutral

Age: estimated to be around 18 | exact age unknown

Appearance:

Spoiler:

Personality:

The thing Mumei cares about more than anything is getting the job done to make Rosencrantz happy and successful. The boy will do whatever it takes to accomplish his objectives and will not stop until he does or is physically incapable of doing it. While Mumei is mainly driven to do this because of his admiration for his father figure, it’s also because of his desire to change the world. The masked one sees the world as a realm corrupted by hatred and that sacrifice is necessary in order to rid the world of hatred. He uses this as justification for all the dark deeds he is required to do in the name of the Utopia Project.

He hides his face under a mask so that his opponents can’t read his emotions and he rarely speaks to ensure that he does not leak any of Rosencrantz’ secrets. The boy never talks about his past, deciding that it was lost to time and that he needed to stop being the child that lost everything, to make Rosencrantz’ ambitions come true. He ignores people completely when they ask for personal information such as his real name or his age, leading to very few people actually knowing anything about him. Suffice to say, Mumei isn’t a social butterfly.

Due to the fact that he never responds to anyone besides Rosencrantz and how he is always seen by the doctor’s side, he is often mistaken to be a Maledetto himself by test subjects (they believe he’s lost his hearing and is called the Dagger of Harmony by other Maledetto). While he doesn’t necessarily desire to be one, Mumei feels great pride in the fact that he is viewed as a vital part of his parent figure’s research. He also doesn’t feel the need to correct people when they’re wrong, letting others believe whatever they want about himself.

The trust Rosencrantz puts in Mumei drives the boy to improve constantly. He is motivated by his father figure’s praise and will push himself constantly to gain his favor. If it is for the sake of the doctor, Mumei is a very hard-working individual that doesn’t know the meaning of slacking off.

The masked figure’s pride in his parent figure has also crippled him mentally; Mumei obsesses over Rosencrantz. Everything he does, he does it because he wants to make the doctor proud. If someone speaks badly of the doctor, he will drop whatever he was focusing on and attempt to murder the person who did it, even if it’s a supposed “ally”. His wills and desires are solely dedicated to Rosencrantz, meaning he is immensely loyal to the madman to the point where he will throw his life away for Rosencrantz. However, this also means that he doesn’t have his own ambitions or interests save for one.

The boy does have a secret side to him that no one, not even Rosencrantz, knows about: he loves flowers very much. When setting out for missions, he makes the time to check out flower fields and will even take off his mask and wear casual clothes to look at flowers in flower shops. While he still ignores people and makes sure he doesn’t let out any hints about his true identity, looking at flowers brings genuine happiness to Mumei that is very easy to see. The boy’s love for flowers even impact how he handles his operations. He will go out of his way to avoid stepping on flowers even if doing so would make his escapes or catching up to people faster. He will also make sure blood doesn’t get splattered on flowers, even doing as much as waiting for the target to move to a new area before striking. The reason for his love of the botanical life is fairly simple: while they will never be able to reciprocate his love for them, they will also never abandon him and they alleviate his constant fear of loneliness because of that fact.

Strengths:

Parkour: To better accomplish his missions and improve his abilities, Mumei trained his body to be able to jump over obstacles and leap short gaps between rooftops. This allows him to clear distances faster, letting him use his mist transformation power for a shorter amount of time and thus draining less energy. It also makes it much easier to escape from dire situations if he’s detected in the middle of a mission.

Quick Learner/Adapter: Mumei is quick to grasp concepts new to him. It usually takes only a few minutes for the boy to understand a new plan or technique the doctor wants him to employ and can pick up on the habits/techniques opponents try to use on him usually after seeing it only a couple times. In addition, if something goes unexpected during a mission or fight, Mumei can change up his tactics to better suite the situation with little difficulty.

Stealth: In addition to being good at moving and traversing terrain, Mumei is efficient in hiding, making it extremely hard to detect him. This allows him to operate from the shadows easily and do covert operations such as spying or capturing of potential test subjects with little worry of being caught himself.

Weaknesses:

Athazagoraphobia: Mumei has an immense fear of being abandoned by Rosencrantz. After his parents were murdered, and he was left to die, Mumei grew to see Rosencrantz as his new father and his savior. The thought of said father figure leaving his life causes Rosencrantz great emotional strife, to the point where he can’t move properly or think straight. His mental state can lead to anything from being completely unable to move to being unable to control his movements and acting completely reckless. The only ways he can snap out of this state is if Rosencrantz himself comforts him or if he sees flowers.

Lack of communication skills: Due to the nature of his missions, Mumei lacks the ability to meaningfully interact with anyone besides Rosencrantz. Because he can’t interact with anyone else in a good way, it makes it very difficult for him to work with any Maledetto or anyone else also working under Rosencrantz, or people in general.

Limited proficiency in weaponry: Mumei is an expert in using swords and daggers, but that’s about it. He is extremely inaccurate when forced to use something long range and would rather run away from a fight than use something like a gun.

History:

Not much is known of Mumei’s early upbringing. He was a child during the Luxembourg rebellion that took place in 2041, the son of a major figure of the rebels. His parents were slaughtered, and he was going to be taken out next, being hit by a bullet in his shoulder. However, the boy subconsciously awakened his mist power and was able to surprise one of the soldiers and kill him with a kitchen knife. However, he grew pale once the mist dispelled and he fell to the ground, assumed to be dead from using all his energy and a still bleeding bullet wound in his shoulder. Unbeknownst to the murderers and the child himself however, one Franklin Rosencrantz witnessed the entire event unfold and decided to save the boy.

After slowly recovering and realizing the fate of his family, the young boy wept and lied in isolation, his hatred for the current state the world growing inside. He talked to the doctor more and more as he continued his rehabilitation and eventually grew to agree with Rosencrantz’ view of the world and decided that he would do whatever he could to ensure that the Utopia Project would be a success. The boy discarded everything about his past life and devoted himself entirely to Rosencrantz. After overhearing Rosencrantz’ joy over his first successful experiment and the naming of his first “tool”, the boy decided that he would also adopt a new name. Once he had a chance to speak with the doctor again, Rosencrantz gifted him the name “Mumei”, as he would be the nameless support of the Utopia Project that lied in the shadows.

The rebellion raged on in Luxembourg, causing more casualties. Rosencrantz continued his experiments but failed to find a subject that could work alongside the “first tool”. Mumei, now a teenager and in more control of his magic, decided to take matters into his own hands. He performed his first mission, murdering a mother and her three-year-old child, and framed it on the son of a major rebellion figure: his past self; driving the father and husband of that family to seek Rosencrantz and accept the experiment, becoming the “second tool” of utopia.

Alongside these two Maledetto, Mumei was able to assist in the end of the rebellion, bringing stability to Luxembourg for now. He went along with Rosencrantz to America to continue finding test subjects, operating in the shadows once more and doing nefarious deeds to push people into volunteering. His work eventually caused the Maledetto to give him the reputation of the left hand of Rosencrantz.

To this day, he hid in the darkness, continuing his life mission. With the recent reemergence of Maledetto, it seems like something major is coming, allowing Mumei to arise from the shadows once more.

Power: Mist

Techniques/Abilities:

Red Wedding- The user projects a large mist field in the surrounding area using either a pre-existing water source or the saliva in their mouth, making it difficult for those without strong eyesight or detection abilities to see. The more energy the user puts into it, the thicker the mist becomes making it harder for others to see. This technique received its nickname due to the fact that rumors arose that anytime someone would enter this mist, the ground would be dyed red once the mist dispelled. Power: Medium when using a water source, High when using the saliva in their mouth
•The user can generate mist from bodily fluids such as sweat and saliva. Power: Medium

Does Mumei think he is better than the Maledetto? Or rather equal/beneath him? Does he feel the need to compete against them to earn Rosencrantz's approval?

It doesn't matter to Mumei if Rosencrantz views them as better or not, as long as Rosencrantz views him as vital and needs him as well. And he doesn't feel the need to compare himself to them as long as both parties are helping Rosencrantz. As for Maledetto that aren't on Rosencrantz' side, he views them as vermin needing to be extinguished since they dared betray the doctor.

He doesn't care whether or not Rosencrantz approves of the Maledetto more or values them more as long as the doctor approves of him as well.

I don't think we've had a mist-powered character or maybe we do and I just can't remember it. I like it. Approved.
