Magic Breakdown Empty Magic Breakdown

Magic is one of the many types of power your character can potentially use. While what's possible is nearly innumerable with magic, there are some things to keep in mind when coming up with ideas for what you want your character to do.

Origins
Magic has many origins. Some people are born gifted, others gain their power through inheritance. There are some that work hard and study for years to learn. There are others that don’t actually have much if any magical power themselves and rely on runes to unleash magic. Here are all the currently known ways to obtain magic:

Magical Inheritance- If someone was born into a family who has a past of magic, they may have magic caused by magical inheritance. This allows them to cast magical spells of all kinds though the level they can cast them is dependent on how far back this Magical Inheritance has gone.

Magical Affinity- This is rare, but it is when someone who doesn’t have any Magical Inheritance or very little still can cast magical spells. People with magical affinity however can only cast low-medium level spells primarily. At most, a magic user with Magical Affinity can use ONE high level spell. Generally, a character that studied magic to learn it or was unlocked after a traumatic encounter falls under this category.

Mana- Very similar to Gwen Tennyson, learning how to use mana is a rather rare occurrence for the human race. All lifeforms have mana, but the human race, like other alien races, cannot control their mana or even know they have it. Gwen Tennyson controls her mana due to her inheritance from her Grandmother who is from another alien race, a race which has strong control over their mana. Every being has the same potential to learn mana but must go through a large sum of training that takes years of dedication, if not their whole life.

Runes- Rather than having powerful magic themselves, some people might have enough magic within them to only use magical runes. These runes can be strong as well and enhance a person’s magic ability, but don’t be mistaken, it’s the runes that are strong. People that use runes primarily don’t have the capability to do advanced magic themselves; the most they can muster outside of their runes is low level spells.

Schools
This is your magical affinity. If you are a fire user, you are from the School of Pyro. No matter how you obtained your magic, you still belong to a school. A person cannot be in two schools at the same time. If you are a rune user, your school does not have to be the same as the type of rune(s) you wield (It is important to remember however that you are not capable of anything but low-level spells from your own school). Mana users belong to the School of Lux by default.  

Pyro- The users of this school have the ability to control fire and heat. They can create it or manipulate fire already formed. They can raise the temperature around them.

Hydro- The users of this school have the ability to control, generate or absorb water. They can even breathe underwater for an hour.

Cryo- The users of this school can cool temperatures around them as well as create ice particles and use ice as an attack.

Geo- The users of this school have the ability to control elements of the earth such as: sand, stone, rock, dirt, or other minerals. Plants also fall under this school.

Aero- The users of this school have the ability to control, absorb, and generate wind currents, along with hovering.

Electro- The users of this school have the ability to control, generate, or absorb electrical currents. They can even travel through the electrical currents up to 10 miles a trip.

Noctem- The users from this school have the ability to manipulate the darkness. This allows them to manipulate shadows, travel relatively unnoticed during the night, and have better vision in the dark. They are identified by a shadow-like outline around their person that is noticeable when it is dark.

Lux- The user of this school has the ability to use light and control it. They can use their powers to make defensive shells and some basic offensive attacks. People who use mana belong to this school.


Non-Elemental Schools


Illusion- With this you can create illusions to trick your foes. You cannot however control them.

Buff- Spells that either increase your power or your defenses for a limited time. Use these with caution though, they’ll leave you drained and you can’t create an absolute defense using this.

Techno- A new magic branch that uses magic and tech together, but not much data about this branch is known at the moment.

Mend- You basically know how to heal, use those skills well to help your friends. Remember though, you can heal, but you aren’t a god. You can’t bring back the dead or perform other miracles like recreating destroyed organs.

Transmutation- You can transform small objects into other objects, but not people. Also lead into gold isn't possible, that is a myth.

Elementalist- You're able to use many different types of elements, but since you’re a master of none, you can't have high powered attacks.

Noise- A branch of magic that uses sound waves to confuse people and or make them hurl their cookies. Don't try for the brown note, it’s a myth. They say some people who belong to this school have the power to make others feel better with their magic.  

Magnetism- With this branch you can twist and shape metal and change them into new objects. You'll do well with a smithy. Just avoid people with metal bones.

Reversal- Formerly known as curses and jinxes, this branch of magic allows you to cause terrible fates to befall your foes, including bad luck and clumsiness. You can also turn buff magic spells into nerf magic.

Arsenal – The user can summon weapons such as blades and brass knuckles. These weapons are part of the body (i.e. the blade would morph a hand or foot into it for the duration of the spell). It can’t bring out things that require ammunition or are long range though.

Plasma – A magic that allows the user to create a slimy liquid or generate it from their body. This liquid is mainly used for trapping/crushing purposes. This is not to be confused with white slime which does something else entirely.
